Is there anyway of making a forum private?

Yes, just open the group options for the group "guests" (admin->>users) and remove the "read"-right for every category/subforum.

If you uncheck the right to "view member profiles", guests will also not be able to access member profiles, the member listing or the "Who's Online" list
