so I talked this through with my colleagues and I'm afraid there won't be any changes to this function soon. The general response was that banning-rights can also be granted to Moderators and therefore should be used in the forum, not the admin-menu.

I still think that at least the option of banning a user for a certain time period could be useful and I'll try to bring that up again when we're less busy developing other Features.

Nevertheless, there is an easy way to pseudo-ban multiple users at once. As you've already figured out, banning a user is technically nothing different then just moving the user to a less privileged group.

So you can just list all users, select the ones you want to ban and then move them all into the "banned users" group.

I just double checked this and relized that the new Function "move multiple users to a different group" hasn't been translated yet.

You'll find it right underneath the member listing in the Adminmenu and it looks like this:



Where

"Ausgewählte Mitglieder" means "Selected members"
"in eine andere Gruppe verschieben" -> move to different Group
"Wählen Sie eine Zielgruppe" -> Select target group

We'll fix the translations with the next update. I hope that helps for now.

We actually just implemented this feature in our development board and it will go online with the next update (which should be sometime later this week or early next week).

You'll find it under "Settings"->Security" once the update is online.

The plan is to still allow them to view the Forum and show an error message whenever a POST request is recieved. This means that banned IPs will not be able to post/upload/comment/signup/login/ etc.

The error message shown will be
"Your request could not be processed. If this problem persists, Please contact the board administrator."

Since this (like all errors) is just a language variable you may of course change it to whatever message you want to display.

The problem with this is that the IP can easily be hidden or changed by anyone. Therefore the IP-Ban is not really a good security measure. If someone would navigate to your site an see nothing but maybe a message that his IP has been banned, he can just go to http://bind2.com/ or one of many other similar sites and access your page from there.

By letting the visitor explore the site normally and just show a rather generic error message when they try to spam chances are that they won't think of using the hide-Ip trick but rather assume there is a problem with the page.

Obviously, if they would use an anonymizer-service to visit your page they'd be able to post again - the IP-Ban is more of an annoyance than a real security measure.

Also, any user with a normal "DSL"-connection will have a different IP everytime they reconnect to their ISP. Only when accessing the internet via a cable provider the IP will always stay static.

Once IP banning is implemented, will i be able to ban an IP range, and how will i be able to change the error message seen?

Banning an IP-range is not possible with the current implementation.
We simply couldn't find one good example why someone would need this...

If you give me one, we might implement this in the future


The error message - and any other text elements - can be changed in "Admin -> Template Development -> Languages"
